Sunday 1 January 1664/65

(Lord’s day). Lay long in bed, having been busy late last night, then up and to my office, where upon ordering my accounts and papers with respect to my understanding my last year’s gains and expense, which I find very great, as I have already set down yesterday. Now this day I am dividing my expense, to see what my clothes and every particular hath stood me in: I mean all the branches of my expense. At noon a good venison pasty and a turkey to ourselves without any body so much as invited by us, a thing unusuall for so small a family of my condition: but we did it and were very merry. After dinner to my office again, where very late alone upon my accounts, but have not brought them to order yet, and very intricate I find it, notwithstanding my care all the year to keep things in as good method as any man can do. Past 11 o’clock home to supper and to bed.

No church today, what with the cold and the revels of nights past and the "intricate" accounting! (I wonder whether the other members of the Navy Board are in church?)

Always a good exercise in managing personal finance to write out a detailed budget. But it can be tricky to get it right, as Sam is finding out.

First venison pasty of the New Year! I wonder how many more there will be?

If only Sam had access to a laptop and spreadsheets he would have become the complete geek:
"See here Bess, my outlay on laces was only 0.89735% of the amount spent on the servants' wages"
Yawn. "Whatever."

And for Jeannine who is resting her fingers…

Sunday. Vice Admiral Myngs his squadron sailed from St. Helens Road. About a ¼ after 6 at night the Blazing Star was distant from Os Baleni 12° 13´, from the third strar in Ore Baleni 11° 30´. His stream and body too was yet diminished, the stream being directed towards the Bull’s Nose, about 6° in length.

RG's note and also Tony's remarks about spreadsheets have reminded me of this: my younger daughter worked for a time in an Adult Store. It was called Wild Concepts, but traded as Technical Services Pty Ltd so any credit card purchases looked oh so innocent on credit card statements which might be seen by a wife's vigilant eye......
