kt. (1677 (1633-92) Fellow of Magdalene College 1652-?55; M.P. for High Wyckombe 1673-9; for Cambridge University 1689-90, 1690-2; Attorney General 1681-7. Once Pepys's Chamber-fellow at Magdalene ( http://www.pepysdiary.com/diary/1666/11/26/ ). An able lawyer with a reputation for subservience to the court (redeemed by his defence of the Seven Bishops, 1688) and for pedantry. His wife (m. 1665) was Margaret, daughter of Ralph Sukley of Islington.

Sir Robert Sawyer, a lawyer of as ill reputation as his father, has had for his attendance this session 1000l. and is promised (as he insinuates) to be attorney general, and speaker of the House of Commons.
