4 farthings = 1d (penny)
4d = 1 groat
12d = 3 groats = 1s (shilling)

The groats in circulation in Pepys's Diary years were the silver fourpenny-pieces issued under Mary Tudor and in the early years (1558-61) of Elizabeth. The next issue was in 1670. (Per an L&M footnote, 19 May, 1663)
