Samuel Pepys: Book Hunting in Restoration London

When: Tuesday 14 May 2019, 5.30pm-7pm
Meeting point: St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London EC4Y 8AU (closest station: Blackfriars)

Samuel Pepys is today most widely known for the fascinating diary he kept between 1660 and 1669. This new walk focuses on what this record tells us about Pepys’s relationship with books, and the people, businesses and institutions of London that helped him form a library like no other.

Alice Ford-Smith (Bernard Quaritch Ltd) will guide you through the streets and alleyways of the City that Samuel Pepys knew so well. You will hear about this Londoner’s remarkable life, his adventures with print and those most closely associated with his collecting.

Please be prepared for plenty of walking, and Pepys’s colourful language.

The walk will commence from the entrance gate of St Bride’s Church and finish approximately 90 minutes later near Tower Hill. This event is open to all, so early booking is recommended. Tickets are £10 each.
