Exchange Alley, the focus of a development project of goldsmith-banker Ald. Edward Backwell (ca. 1618–1683), was described as 'new' in 1662 and after the 1668 post-Fire rebuilding of that part of of London as 'a place of very considerable Concourse of Merchants, Seafaring Men and other Traders.'
