Gervase Holles [ antiquarian ] was born in Grimsby and was elected as a Grimsby Mayor twice, also subsequently being elected and becoming its Member of Parliament three times during his eventful life. A stone-carved effigy of his head today takes pride of place and can still be found gazing high above the Town Hall. Despite Cromwell's troops visiting Grimsby and ransacking Gervase Holles' home during the 17th century, some manuscripts that he had been compiling for a Lincolnshire history project survived or were re-written, including those that referred to Grimsby. The latter transcribed manuscript has been almost fully included here and will show that the Grimsby Seal features as an important piece of material evidence used in his defence of the founding legend. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nige…
