L&M: Pepys's account of the fall of Clarendon in this and succeeding entries confirms on the whole Clarendson's own version in his Life, and is greatly superior to the Duke of York's brief treatment in his memoirs. The best modern account is in Clayton Roberts, Growth of responsible government in Stuart Engl, ch. 5. [This opinion is ca. 1971.]
