I've been reading the Modern Library unabridged Pepys' as an escape from politics (Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in yesterday). It's so rich with illustrations of the entrenched depth and the slow pace of change of human nature and western capitalism. Most days it's a calming influence, but gems like the above pop the spell and make me wonder just how far us Yanks are intending to rewind civilization. Sorry, world.
