  • From the OED
    “Sweet food, as sugared cakes or pastry, confectionary; preserved or candied fruits, sugared nuts, etc.; also, globules, lozenges,

  • Confectionery, including candied fruit and sugared nuts. Often associated with children as in the modern “sweets”, or American “candy”. Quote in OED from 1640: “Or, like little Children, when we have been whipt and beaten, be pleased again with Sweetmeats.” Shakespeare (Romeo & Juliet): “Their breath with Sweet meats tainted are.”
