FOLKE, John (d.1662), lord mayor, 1652-3; imprisoned for refusing to pay tonnage and poundage, 1627-9; sheriff of London and leader of city parliamentarians, 1643; fined and imprisoned for conduct as a commissioner of customs, 1648; M.P. for the city, 1661; benefactor of Bethlehem and Christ's hospitals.---Dictionary of National Biography: Index and Epitome.
