She was scared sis would come down with the dreaded Summer Complaint, an occasionally deadly case of diarrhea. It was attributed to eating raw cucumbers (and perhaps other vegetables) in the summer, but was later found by science to be caused by spoiled/bad milk. This happened in southeast Kansas, USA in the late 1980s. When I read this entry that is what I thought of.
