Let's give Uncle a break. Sam says the good stuff has been sent out of town due to the troubles. It's not as of he does not possess top notch plate. He's awaiting their return.
If I recall correctly there's another part of the cellar that's not so nice. Yes Allen. I believe there was or is (?) an over flow from next door. Humm, where there is muck, there's brass.
Good points above. Many thanks. The lads appear to be frequenting Mr. Cooke a lot recently. At first I thought this was a hostelry but it is a private house/ residency? A rich merchant. And popular.
Definitely a change over the last few days. Ties in with the notes being pasted into to diary. And agree with above comments; too busy to write them up and love the idea that he had left the diary on his ship. Patience required folks. Sam is soon back to his old self.
I suspect that the "plate" that was left at home is not what we now call "silver plate", i.e. silver plated on base metal such as copper or cupronickel. Nick, so actual eat off kind of plates? Not bars? Does the term plate cover any of his silver items?

Here we staid and drank three or four pints of wine and so parted.
Would that be 3 or 4 each?
Anyone know the alcoholic content of wine? Were there laws covering it's strength?
