New maps of places in the diary

I’ve just added a new feature to the site: maps showing many places at once. They allow you to, for example, see all the churches in London Pepys has mentioned in one glance. Or London streets, or places outside Britain, and more.

I’ve just added a new feature to the site: maps showing many places at once. They allow you to, for example, see all the churches in London Pepys has mentioned in one glance. Or London streets, or places outside Britain, and more.

Although we’ve had maps showing the locations of individual buildings, roads, etc for some time it seems more interesting and useful to be able to compare many on one map. It gives a better impression of the size of Pepys’ day-to-day world.

To help with these maps I’ve re-organised the categories of places in the Encyclopedia, particularly around what is defined as “within” and “outside” London. I’ve settled on defining London as being roughly what Pepys would have called London. Places beyond this, but still within what we think of as London today, are in London environs.

There are a lot of places listed in the Encyclopedia that don’t have location information and so aren’t shown on these maps at the moment. I hope to add more of them. If you come across a place in the Encyclopedia that doesn’t show a Google map when you view its own page, and you know where it is (or was) located, try using something like Get Lat Lon to find out the latitude and longitude and email them to me.

You should find links to these maps from appropriate places throughout the Encyclopedia. Thanks to those from the discussion group who suggested improvements on some early maps.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to test these maps fully on Windows, so do let me know if you find anything that doesn’t work as expected. And any other suggestions for improvement (whether about the maps or not) are always appreciated.

Some time ago I added the average monthly temperature and links to the House of Commons and House of Lords journals to the side of each diary entry. I’ve now added links to information at the Records of Earls Colne.

The site includes the diary of Ralph Josselin, the vicar of this Essex village, which have been posted in annotations here in the past. I’ve now added links from Pepys’ Diary pages directly to Josselin’s diary entries for the same days, where available.

The Earls Colne site also includes many church records — of baptisms, marriages, burials, etc — plus various documents from court proceedings. I’ve now added links from the relevant days to these sources.

Pepys didn’t have any direct connection to Earls Colne (a village forty miles north east of London) as far as I know, but I thought these contemporary documents would help provide some extra atmosphere and background reading. Here’s an example.

A long time ago, possible last year, I promised to round up some statistics about the site, such as the number of visitors. Sorry it’s taken so long, but here it finally is. As a point of comparison, here’s the first and possibly last time I wrote about this stuff.

Entries and annotations

The Diary section of the site currently has 2,053 entries (not all of them published yet) and 41,466 annotations (this figure doesn’t include spam annotations), so that’s an average of about 20 annotations per diary entry. Here’s a graph from Movable Type showing the number of annotations on diary entries over the past four months:

The Encyclopedia section features 3,049 topics (again, not all published), 1,724 of them people, and 6,791 annotations. Here’s the annotations graph for the Encyclopedia:

The In-Depth Articles and the Site News sections of the site have received 180 and 919 comments respectively making for a grand total of 49,356 across the whole site.

Every link from a Diary entry to an Encyclopedia topic creates a reference back to the Diary entry and there have been 30,581 of these to date.

Visitors, page views, etc.

According to Google Analytics, over the past month (29th June to 28th July) the site has had 25,378 Absolute Unique Visitors (ie, different people) visiting a total of 54,240 times for a total of 132,465 Pageviews.

Here are some graphs of daily statistics from May 2007, the earliest I have Google Analytics data for (click to see larger versions).

Visits:

Pageviews:

Average time on site:

And here’s a map indicating where Visits come from:

And data for the top 25 countries (according to number of Visits):

For those interested in such things, here’s a breakdown of which web browsers and operating systems are most popular here:

This is an indication of where traffic comes from:

(“Direct Traffic” is people who have bookmarked the site or type the URL in; “Search engines” is visits that came from someone searching on Google etc; and “Referring Sites” is visits that occurred by someone following a link from any other site to get here.)

Here are the top 25 things people searched for on search engines to get here (numbers in brackets are the number of visits for that search term over the past month):

RSS feeds and email

Finally, a summary of how many people read the site via RSS or email (possibly in addition to on the web). The main Diary feed has 2,461 subscribers, the Story So Far feed has 106 subscribers, the Encyclopedia 60 subscribers, Site News 72 and In-Depth Articles 59.

Here’s a graph showing the number of subscribers to the Diary feed since I started using FeedBurner to host the feeds in October 2007:

This is a break-down of how subscribers to the Diary feed have been reading it over the past month:

Recent Activity and spam

An unfortunate side effect of the recent upgrade to Movable Type seems to be that suddenly more spam is getting through in annotations (and on the comments on my other sites). I’m not sure why this is at the moment, but I’ll keep my eye on it and delete them as soon as I can. The next (very imminent) update to the software promises a new method of stopping spam, and there are other things we could try, such as requiring people to log in before posting annotations.

If you see any spam that’s older than a day or two, please do let me know, otherwise assume that I’ll remove it when I’m next online. Thanks for your patience.

I’ve had a quick attempt at making these more efficient but haven’t had any joy yet.

There is a way I can get Movable Type, the software that runs the site, to generate these lists automatically when a new annotation is posted, but I’d like to change the way the software is installed before doing this. (For those interested, I’d move MT to run under FastCGI which should be more efficient.)

I hope to have time to do this, as well as upgrading Movable Type to the latest version, which should also increase efficiency, some time over the next week or so. Apologies again, but it’s been one of those busy weeks.
