  • Per L&M Companion:

    (d. 1683), a member of a leading Royalist family in Somerset. He had been Governor of Bridgwater during the Civil War, and after exile during the Commonwealth was made a Groom of the Bedchamber in 1660. He served as M.P. for Bridgewater in the Short, Long and Cavalier Parliaments. His wife Christabella (B. Pyne, d. c. 1662), a strikingly beautiful woman, had been Charles II’s nurse, and retained a strong influence over him for several years — so strong that she almost succeeded in having her husband made Secretary of State.
