Of St. Alfege’s parish, Greenwich. A Capt. Thomas Clygate occurs in the parish register for 1648.

Col. Cleggat was Col. Edward Clagett, the son-in-law of Sir Thomas Adams, Lord Mayor of London in 1645. Adams was a supporter of the Stuarts, and was one of those who was sent to Breda to negotiate the return of Charles II, who knighted him and allowed him to purchase a baronetcy upon the restoration. Like his father-in-law, Clagett was a very wealthy draper, he was Master (i.e. head) of the Draper’s Company in 1672-3 (and died during his term of office.) He had moved his family to Greenwich sometime around 1655. The title Colonel time as the commander of the Blue Band of the London Trained Bands (militia) in the 1640s.
