  • Emslie, in L&M, from the internal diary evidence of specific songs sung by Pepys in 1660 & 1662, concludes that he had copies of the following three works, possibly bound together as one volume:-

    Lawes, Henry, 1596-1662.

    Ayres and dialogues, for one, two, and three voyces. By Henry Lawes servant to his late Matie: in his publick and private musick. The first booke.
    [Variant title Pastorall Dialogues]
    London : printed by T[homas]. H[arper]. for John Playford, and are to be sold at his shop, in the Inner Temple, near the church door, 1653.
    [12], 36, 28 p. : music (woodcut) ; 2⁰. The words “Henry … musick.” are part of the engraved caption of the title-page portrait, signed “W: Faithorne fecit”. “Pastorall Dialogues” (caption title) begins new pagination on leaf 2A1r. Signatures: a-b² A-K², 2A-2G². Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), L638

    [12], 32, [8], 33-48 p. : music ; 2⁰. The words “Henry .. musick” are part of the engraved caption of the title-page portrait, signed “W: Faithorne fecit”.
    Pages 33-43 contain music for two or more performers. Performers’ respective parts are set together on the same page, with one musician’s part inverted.
