  • Dr. William Waldegrave

Apparently later personal physician to James, Duke of York, and knighted after his accession to the throne.

“North [Roger North] described Waldegrave as ‘a prodigy of an arch-lutinist.’ As Waldegrave played the archlute and had spent much time studying in Rome, where the Renaissance tuning had never been supplanted by altered tunings, it is reasonable to suppose he also played in Renaissance tuning.”

Matthew Spring ‘The Lute in Britain: A History of the Instrument and Its Music’ Oxford: OUP, 2001. p. 397.
