I assume this ship is named after the Battle of Cheriton, which took place in March 1644

The Royalists and the Parliamentarians fought on Cheriton Down in 1644.
The Cheriton was renamed the Speedwell in the mass renaming described at http://www.pepysdiary.com/archive/1660/05/23/index.php
Under either identity it was a fifth-rate of twenty guns built at Deptford in 1655 by Mr. Callis.
