THE USURPER.
a tragedy.
As it was acted at the Theatre Royal by his Majesties servants in January 1663. Written by the Honourable Edward Howard, esq. Licens’d August 2. 1667 4to. Printed for Henry Herringman at the Anchor in the Lower Walk of the New Exchange in London. 1668.***
The Usurper begins with the title character, a successful [ Syracusan ] army general named Damocles, plundering and purging a senate, then accepting a crown [ of Sicily ] from its remaining members, all with the assistance of a scheming ‘parasite’, named Hugo de Petra lest we overlook the application to Cromwell and Hugh Peters.
