1893 text

Shag was a stuff similar to plush. In 1703 a youth who was missing is described in an advertisement as wearing “red shag breeches, striped with black stripes.” (Planche’s “Cyclopxdia of Costume “).

This text was written as a footnote in the 1893 Wheatley transcription of the diary, the same one that is used for the diary entries on this site.

    A fabric made by weaving, felting, knitting or crocheting fibers.

    A coarse long nap, as on a woolen cloth.
