Clapham, Surrey. A village of 92 houses in 1664, some 4-1/2 miles from the Standard on Cornhill, on the road to Richmond. A number of well-to-do Londoners lived or had country villas there, including Gauden, the Navy Victualler, who lived in a large house which after 1688 became Pepys’s country retreat. He spent many happy months in his ‘Paradisian Clapham’ as Evelyn called it, and it was there that he died.
