He made a fortune in Russia by trade. On 30th May 1663 he was knighted by Charles at Whitehall.
Sir John and his son Sir Richard both made vital contributions to the economy and business expansion of the British Empire. Their tombs in Wells Cathedral, England, are still visited by many admirers and descendants.
