L&M Companion says he’s a rich friend of Sandwich and has been advising him financially since the 50s. “As an M.P. (elected Nov. 1640, 1660) he was active in financial and fiscal business and belonged to the same moderate, Prebyterian group as the Crews. His wife (d. 1670) was Elizabeth Cole, once laundress to Charles I.”
Warrington has the following: “Sir William Wheler, of Westminster, was created a baronet 11th Augus 1660, with remainder to his cousin, Charles Wheler, who succeeded to the honour upon his death. He was then M.P. for Queensborough”.
Sir William’s wife, in fact, was the mysterious personage who held on to a cache of jewels for Charles I, who
seems to have been hiding them from Parliament, and who distributed them to his children later.See Masson’s *Life of Milton*.
