  • Hannah, the heroic cook (and cleaner-up-after) of the 1663 feast in honor of Pepys’s 1558 stone-cutting, who well deserved the 12d. tip many guests gave her that 4 April:

    Perhaps if L&M give her surname she just might be found in the Companion. That volume’s article on “Household: Servants” does not happen to mention her, though full of worthwhile information on Numbers (of servants), Wages, Status and duties, Hiring and firing, and—-always our much-debated favorite—-Discipline.
