L&M Companion, p. 43:
“Liveryman of the Painter Stainers’ Company; living in the parish of St. Matthew, Friday Street at the time of his marriage in 1635. His bills for ‘divers painted works’ in the Navy Office buildings appear in the Treasurer’s ledgers under ‘Extra Service on the Seas.’” Died by 1668.
Capt. Brewer was apparently a painting contractor to the Navy, not a seaman.

Liveryman:A senior member of a City of London Company, or guild, as distinct from a junior member kown as a “freeman.” A Liveryman has the priivilege of voting for the sheriffs and Lord Mayors of the City.
Painter-Stainers Company:The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers
ranks twenty-eighth in the order of precedence of Livery Companies [of the City of London]. The Company’s motto is Amor Queat Obedientiam, Latin for Love Can Compel Obedience.
