  • Why is Robert Leigh identified as Mr. Lee? There is no explicit mention of Mr. Lee’s first name in the Diary entries. Only once does Pepys change Lee to Leigh which mat be that Leigh is a variation of Lee as Lea. But again there is no mention of Robert as first name. In the annotation for November 7/1662 I identified Mr.Abraham Lee as the delegate of the Secretary of State Bennet or Lord Arlington. Abraham’s father was Robert Lee who would have been in 1662 an old gentleman in his sixties, since Abraham was at that time 42 years old. Pepys was 39 which accounts for his rather easy relation with Mr. Lee whom he invites to his home.
