  • I have an ancestor JAMES MARSH b. 1790 St. Mary`s Whitechapel son of Henry and Mary. Became a Lighterman and Waterman, was a Ship Agent and Broker and Customs House Agent working in Gt Tower St., living in Baltic St, newly-built estate of a Baltic Sea trader, while another James Marsh not far distant was a Timber Merchant. Married Susannah Chipman 1812 at Woolchurch Haw. Had one daughter Amelia. Worked first perhaps for his father as the firm was Marsh & Co., by 1820s working alone. Was alive in 1840 but not found on Censuses as Ship Agents were often at sea!
