Leading Baltic merchant and navy contractor; assistant of the Eastland Company (app. 1654); Master of the Mercers’ Company 1656-7. Son of Sir Robert, K.B.; and father of Sir William, Bt. Pepys refers to him as an alderman although he had avoided the office by fining on the day of his election in 1651.
