  • from L&M Companion
    (c. 1600-78. Teacher of mathematics, and author of many works on the subject; editor of “The Seamans Kalendar” 1631-51. For some time after c. 1633 he was employed as ‘Reader of Navigation’ to the Mariners’ at Chatham yard. After the Restoration he made important investigations into the variations of the compass and methods of determining longitude. When Pepys speaks of his living ‘at our end of town’, he was living in Tower Bulwark. He later moved to Ratcliff.
