The Surveyor was one of the four principal officers of the Navy Board. The Surveyor was responsible for the design, building and repair of the ships. He also supervised the work in the dockyards. At the Restoration Sir William Batten, the former Parliamentary Admiral was appointed Surveyor, an appointment which he had also held back in 1638 before the civil war. His appointment was evidence of the Restoration Government’s willingness to mend bridges between the Royalists and former Commomwealth adherents.
