St John Stephenton was appointed Clerk of the Cheque at Portsmouth in 1660; and served as Mayor in 1664-5 and 1675-6. His wife, according to Pepys a ‘very debauched woman’, was accidentally burnt to death in 1665 when in a drunken stupor. The Stevenson/Steventon who was Hewer’s uncle may have been John Stephenson, traceable as a purser in 1655, 1664, and 1676.

    [L&M are quite remarkable!]
