L&M know hardly anything about her
She operated an inn in Portsmouth where Pepys, Dr. Timothy Clarke (together) and Sir George Carteret stayed in April 1663.
Pepys mentions — only twice in the diary (April 24 and 29) — that he’s at “Mrs. Stephens” during his visit to Portsmouth. Maybe the food was good, because her place is “where we keep our table all the time we are here.”
The L&M Index volume doesn’t list “Stephens’s” in the taverns section because L&M weren’t sure of the name of the inn. The only index citation is under her name, and we only know the last name.
