Richard Godfrey, gentleman, of Broughton, Hunts. —or rather his estate—was involved in the disputes which arose from the will of Pepys’s uncle Robert Pepys. He had died by Nov. 1661, but it was he who had held the bond for L200 which led Pepys deep into Chancery with the Trice family. Godfrey’s son Henry (who had witnessed the bond) had married Mercy, sister of the Trice brothers. A smaller matter was that Robert Pepys died owing Godfrey L40. His son Henry secured the money after threatening a lawsuit. Henry later lived at Burford, Oxfs., and was an executor or Tom Trice’s will (1672).
