How interesting is the use of bayte.The Oxford dictionary gives bait as ‘a snack on a journey’ and ‘feed for a horse’ as two of the word’s meanings. Webster seems to have not come across such meanings for bait. When fruit picking in Gloucestershire in the 1960s and lorry-driving in Herefordshire in the 1980s my workmates all had ‘bait-time’ for their mid-morning snack. I had always taken it to be local slang. So, Sam had his bait-time too three hundred years ago.
