Alehouse keeper, Brampton. Her house was inherited by Pepys’s father from his brother Robert. Her will survives: signed Nov. 1670, proved Oct. 1676. She was Margaret, a widow, and signed by making a mark. Her son Henry was cut off with a shilling; the rest of the goods went to Thomas Kent, a grandson. Will Stankes signed as witness. Keepers of alehouses were often widows: at Bideford in 1660 they numbered about one quarter of the total.
