    Dymoke, [Sir Edward], kt 1661 (d. 1664).
    King’s champion at the coronation 1661. The office—held since the 14th century by the Dymokes—was hereditary in the family owning the manor of Scrivelsby, Lincs. The champion’s function was to ride fully armed into Westminster Hall during the coronation feast, and to challenge to combat anyone denying the sovereign’s right to the throne. The ceremony fell into disuse, with the feast, after the coronation of George IV in 1821.
