Description

The Exchequer offices were in the palace of Westminster, on the eastern side of New Palace Yard. Pepys worked here in the early years of the diary.

Annotations

  • The British governmental department charged with the collection and management of the national revenue.

  • Exchequer AS A GOVERNMENT OFFICE

  • On display in the foyer of the National Audit Office in Buckingham Palace Road is a Memo written by Pepys during his time at the Exchequer. Also an original checkered accounting cloth, a variant of the abacus which is where the expression “Exchequer” originated.
