Thomas Kinward was a master joiner, known for the work he did for the architect Sir Christopher Wren. He is credited with developing the modern sash window. see: http://www.sashwindowspecialist.com/history.html
We will probably never know the true inventor of the box sash window, but the information currently available points towards Sir Christopher Wren & his close associates. Robert Hooke (Wrens chief assistant) was a prolific inventor and he is most often credited as the inventor of sash windows, whilst Thomas Kinward (Wrens master joiner) appears to be the first person to make record of the specification. It is quite possible that they both had an input into the design that ultimately became a classic.
