  • A singer and composer

Hill was appointed “Gentleman” of the Chapel Royal in 1661, according to the L&M Companion volume, although a footnote for 28 October 1660 (p. 276, L&M Vol. 1) indicates that Hill is already a “musician of the Chapel Royal.”

Does that mean there were musicians in that organization longside “Gentlemen”? Or is either the footnote or the Companion volume entry simply wrong?

The L&M Index lists Roger Hill as appearing in the diary only twice (once in 1660, again in 1661). Both index references indicate that it is uncertain if Roger Hill is the person to whom Pepys refers.

  • Pepys also knows these “Chapel Royalists”:

    Thomas Blagrave
Chapel Royal “clerk of the cheque” as of 1662

    William Child
Chapel Royal organist as of 1660
