  • He worked in the Exchequer

Ashwell and various members of his family appear in the diary, but apparently too little is known of him for L&M to have an entry in the Companion volume. We don’t even have his first name.

On 2 January 1660 he talks and sings with Pepys at Will’s tavern. On 30 January he is socializing with Pepys and others.

In addition to having worked in the Exchequer together, Pepys and Ashwell may have a love of music in common. He next appears in the diary on 23 October 1660, when Pepys meets up with Ashwell, his cousin, Sam Ashwell and Thomas Mallard (a violin player and composer).
