The John Bowles who escorted Pepys and his money from Brampton in Oct. 1667, and taught him the 'terms of hunting' en route, was a servant of Sandwich's. In 1666 a John Bowles occupied a house of four hearths in Brampton; this is probably the same John Bowles who in 1680 made a will leaving property there. He signed with a cross. A year later Pepys let a meadow at Ellington to one John Bowles.
