once a seaman, now a lieutenant on board the 'Royal Charles'; known to Pepys because he was the son-in-law of Mrs. Clerke, ( http://www.pepysdiary.com/encyclopedia/9069/ ) Pepys's landlady when he lodged at Greenwich in 1665-6.
